Spelthorne submits application to build homes in Staines-upon-Thames - January 2023

Spelthorne Borough Council has submitted a planning application to build 105 apartments in the centre of Staines-upon-Thames.

The Council has submitted revised plans on a current application to build 105 one and two-bedroom apartments at Thameside House in South Street with parking. The scheme also includes 36,720sq ft of energy efficient office space which the Council plans to lease to a multi-national company, ensuring the retention of over 240 local jobs.

The Council consulted on the scheme's proposals from 24 June - 10 July and held public exhibitions on 24/25 June and 4/5 November to outline updates to scheme. Several changes were made in response to the feedback received during the consultation phase, including a reduction in the height of the development from 15 storeys to 11.

Like many areas in the UK, demand for affordable local housing is increasing in Spelthorne and the delivery of high-quality homes which meet the needs of all sections of the community is a key priority for the Council and forms part of the corporate plan.

The application is not expected to be considered by the Council's Planning Committee until April at the earliest. If the planning application is successful, the Council will then partner with Homes England to secure grant funding, enabling the development to offer 100% affordable homes for future residents.

Cllr Maureen Attewell, Chair of Spelthorne's Community Wellbeing and Housing Committee, said: "This is the culmination of many years of work and represents a significant stage in the process. Working with Homes England, this project will deliver in providing more affordable local homes for local people.

"I would like to thank everyone who took part in the consultation for this development; the feedback we received was really valuable and has helped us shape the proposals to address the requirements of local residents."
