Spelthorne publishes new Leisure and Culture Strategy

Leisure Strategy 2025-2035
Spelthorne has published a new strategy setting out how the Council will support the provision of leisure and cultural activities over the coming years

The strategy gives a clear vision for a borough with a thriving network of leisure opportunities and vibrant cultural scene where people want to live, work, study and visit. To this end the strategy outlines four key priority areas - people, place, community and environment.

Recognising that Spelthorne has an ageing population, as well as being home to many young families and professionals, the Council aims to address inequalities and improve outcomes for people of all ages by ensuring everyone has access to leisure and cultural activities and amenities which suit their needs.

The Leisure and Culture Strategy builds upon a strong foundation that the Council has established over a number of years, working collaboratively alongside key strategic partners to affect change.

The strategy will be complemented by a rolling delivery plan which will be developed in the first year. It will be a live document with flexibility to respond to opportunities that may arise as well as changing demands and emerging needs.

Chair of Spelthorne Borough Council's Community Wellbeing and Housing Committee, Cllr Susan Doran, said: "While leisure and culture activities are considered to be 'discretionary services', meaning that the Council is not obliged to provide them, we firmly believe that they are fundamental to a thriving society and provide immeasurable benefits for the health, wellbeing and happiness of residents. Ultimately, it is our aim to implement positive change to help our communities be happier, healthier and more resilient."
