Council's housing programme suspended - September 2023

Council's housing programme suspended - September 2023

Councillors representing the Corporate Policy & Resources Committee have unanimously voted to suspend Spelthorne Borough Council's housing development programme.

The Committee met on 11 September to consider a report by officers which outlined the increasing risks associated with residential development as a result of rising interest rates and significant construction inflation.

It concluded that it is no longer preferable or appropriate for the Council to directly bear these risks and recommended that alternative delivery methods are explored.

As a result of the decision, detailed papers setting out options and a recommended approach will be presented to the Corporate Policy & Resources Committee and Full Council in October.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Joanne Sexton, said: "Residents can be assured that this suspension will give the Council the opportunity to assess all possible options. These will be worked up in consultation with residents and councillors with a prospect of a place shaping strategy to frame the Council's approach."
